Spiritual Spring in the Syrian Summer

We ask your help to support a group of 10 young Christians from Syria, to partake in spiritual programs and recreational activities in Europe this summer. To draw from Christian spiritual wellsprings, experience religious community and solidarity, build new connections, get some rest and refreshment. They will affect their home communities when they return to daily life and service with renewed strength and hope.

If, due to any circumstances it won’t be possible to organize these summer programmes, or to organize the participation of Syrian youth, then we are going to transfer all the received donations to the Jesuits working in Syria, to support their mission.

The origin of the idea

In recent years, on the MAGIS Central Europe programs, there were always participants from the Jesuit Near East Province. Ferenc Kiss SJ spent the last summer in Lebanon and attended there the Regional Youth Days. This was an international, ecumenical meeting where Catholic, Orthodox, Copt and Maronite youth gathered for daily activities and prayers. They were radiating joy, as it is a rare occasion in their region, that they can live, share, deepen and celebrate  their faith in community with so many young people. At home they are in minority, facing discrimination and/or danger.

Some participants came from Syria, where they are helping the local Jesuits: rebuilding, animating various groups and activities around the church, organizing catechesis camps, etc. To the invitation to participate in MAGIS 2020 in Hungary, they replied with a plea for help: because of their economic situation, they can’t reach such events without support.

Program Summary

MAGIS Europe 2020 (1-9 August). MAGIS is an international meeting for young people from all over the world who are interested in Ignatian spirituality. This year’s host of this meeting is Hungary.

Visit to Taizé (16-30 August). The brothers at Taizé offered to welcome this group for the program of a regular summer week and the reflection week.

International Eucharistic Congress, Budapest (13-20 September). The IEC is a worldwide celebration with the aim of deepening the knowledge and the respect for the Eucharist. It is the witness of Catholic Christians about God’s love to the world.

In the times between these programs, we would like to give the group an opportunity to have some days free, as holiday. Meetings with helping organizations could be held.

Detailed costs

The total cost of this program would be an estimated 1.400 € / person.

The minimal cost of coming to Europe and participating only in the MAGIS program would be ca. 800 €/person (most of these are the travel and visa expenses).

– travel from Syria and back: ca. 400 €

– Costs concerning visa: ca. 100 €

– Participation fee of MAGIS: 130 €

– Health and travel insurance: ca. 170 €

– Travel costs to Taizé and back: ca. 250 €

– food, accomodation and program costs for the “holiday part” of the program: ca. 350 €

Depending on the generosity of the donations we receive, we will finance some part or the whole of this program, for as many young people as possible. If the actual costs turn out to be lower than expected, we will use the extra money to support more people.

How can I support?

We would greatly appreciate it, if you could support our campaign by making a donation and then sharing it with your network. We know that money can be tight, so please know that even 10  € helps us get closer to our goal!
